At the dawn of the 21st century, brain research provides unprecedented capabilities to pay a very intimate molecular, optical and electrical visit to the living and behaving brain. This enables us to intervene, in real-time, with brain processes. Such a technological leap is already used for repairing sick brains but it could also potentially be used to manipulate and change the brain and to ?read thoughts? directly from the brain. It will enable neuroscientists to ask questions that previously were solely within the philosophical realm, such as ?do we have free will?? Neuroethics discusses the philosophical and ethical implications of such modern voyages into the brain; what are the limits of intervening with the brain, e.g., augmenting cognition? Should we allow the use of ?brain polygraphs?? What are the consequences of discovering that ?Free will is an illusion,? as many neuroscientists have started claiming recently?
